The Wanders women displayed a dominant performance and crushed the Kone Sharks with a 33-7 win during the Capital Rugby Union Women’s (CRUW) match on Sunday, 14th July, 2024, at Port Moresby International School in Port Moresby.
The Wanderers started slowly in the first half but the Kone Sharks did not make use of the opportunity. The close first-half contest saw both teams secure a try each with successful conversion, leaving the half-time scores at 7-all .
The second half of the match saw Wanderers return with a changed plan and dominated the Sharks. Wanderers secured 4 tries with 3 successful conversions, finishing with the score of 33.
Wanderers women’s head coach Paul Somoso reviewed the match, stating that they did not really bind together as a team in the first half, but they stepped up in the second half and delivered perfectly.
“The leaders of the team stood up and made it easier for them to play and perform what they do best. Our advantage was mostly in the forward,” coach Somoso said.
Meanwhile, in a significant event of the day, NiuPower (major sponsor of CRUW competition) presented sets of Jerseys to the ten participating teams of the 2024 NiuPower Capital Rugby Union Women’s competition. NiuPower CEO Michael Uiari and CRU President Kori Chan were there for the official launch of the jerseys and photo shoots with the teams.
The NCDC women’s representative team Jersey was also revealed and Jonah Kautu Jr was named as the head coach.
