Smart Start Niukick School Competition heads into finals

The Smart Start NiuKick School Competition has concluded all of its round games, where the final fixtures were played on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at Murray Barracks Oval.

This Junior and Youth AFL competition, which has been running for the past two months, is heading into the playoffs this weekend.

AFL PNG Development Manager, David Topeni, said they would proceed with the finals this weekend.

“The finals will include both under 13 boys and girls, under 15 boys and girls, and under 17 boys and girls," said Topeni.

"We have three weekends of finals, and then we look forward to the big dance coming up. We are expecting a good number of players to turn up, as well as supporters.”

This junior and youth development competition collaborates with primary and secondary schools. Last year, the school programs returned after the COVID-19, which affected the normal operations of the programs.

The management adapted well last year, reviving the operations  and the competition, which ran smoothly, resulting in a successful 2023 season.

The competition expanded from involving only primary schools to successfully including secondary schools, resulting in more participants this 2024 season.

Topeni said that having only primary schools participate in the competition last year motivated them to ensure that under 17 secondary school students took part in this season's competition.

He expressed delight at the success of this season, stating,"We have many secondary schools taking part in the competition this season, and it has been a success."
