One of PNG’s experienced kickboxers, Nelson Samson, claimed the Intercontinental Title (80kg division) following his brutal knockout win over Chee Jian Kai from Malaysia in less than one minute during the PNG Kickboxing Federation International Title Fights hosted at the Taurama Aquatic and Indoor Center in Port Moresby on Saturday, December 28th, 2024.
The bout didn’t live up to its billing, as Samson dominated and mercilessly knocked out his Malaysian opponent in round 1, clinching the 80kg Intercontinental Title division. It was a one-sided affair, where Nelson made a statement and stole the spotlight.
Nelson has had a successful kickboxing career spanning over a decade. In his colorful career, he has tasted success both in PNG and overseas. He is currently one of the best kickboxers in the country.
The veteran campaigner was pleased with his outstanding performance, attributing his victory to the preparation and hard work he had put in for six weeks just to be ready for the intercontinental bout.
“I have been training hard for this fight because I’m an international fighter; I travel and fight overseas. I did fight against some of the best fighters in the world, so I wasn’t doubting myself when I fought the Malaysian guy (Chee Jian Kai),” Samson said.
“I never fought in PNG in the international title fight before, so it was good to see the support from the fans. They used to hear my name but never saw me fight in PNG, so it was a good feeling.
“The Malaysian guy was a two-time World Kickboxing Champion and current MMA fighter, so fighting against him and defeating him in 20 seconds made me proud. This is my home country and I was confident that I would win the fight, and I did.”
Samson dedicated his win to his dad, who is a hardworking police officer, and also thanked the PNG Kickboxing Federation President Stanley Nandex and his executives, including Brave Entrepreneurs PNG, his family, and supporters.
Nelson Samson is now shifting his focus to participate in the World Kickboxing event next year. He is confident and looks forward to making his mark in the upcoming world tournament.
