PSL kicks off season in style

The long-awaited Premier Soccer League (PSL) Competition kicked off its 2024 season from July 6th-7th in Lae and Port Moresby, respectively, over the weekend. Both venues were packed with avid football followers, who went to cheer and root for their respective teams.

Highly entertaining football games were showcased by the eight clubs on the weekend. The seven clubs who participated in the 2023 season have retained their spots for the 2024 season, while Admiralty Island FC made their return to the top-flight competition after a nine-year hiatus.

The semi-professional competition began its campaign in Morobe’s Capital on Saturday, July 6th, hosting a double-header at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium. In the opening local derby match, the Lae City FC edged the Lae City Dwellers with a 1-0 win, while the Komara FC defeated the Morobe Wawens, 2-1.

Then in the Nation’s Capital on Sunday, July 7th, the PNG Football Stadium hosted another double-header fixture. The Port Moresby Strikers came from behind to force a 2-all draw against the United Highlands FC, and the final match of the day between the Hekari United FC and Admiralty Island FC, saw the reigning champions (Hekari) prove too strong over the newcomers with a 2-0 victory to wrap up round 1.

The 2024 Premier Soccer League competition promises to deliver another thrilling season, as the eight teams rise to the occasion and battle for supremacy. The Hekari United FC are optimistic to defend their title, while the six other contenders, with the inclusion of Admiralty Island FC, are upbeat and ready to vie for the coveted silverware. Buckle up and ready to enjoy the 2024 PSL campaign, as the eight competitors live up to its billing.
