Captain Alwin Komolong's heroics helped PNG Kapuls brush off a determined Solomon Islands with a nail-biting 3-2 win in the extra time of the Melanesian Spearhead Group Prime Minister’s Cup on Wednesday, December 18th, 2024, at the National Stadium in Honiara, Solomon Islands.
The much-needed victory gave hope to PNG as they look to face Vanuatu in the decider on Saturday, December 21st, to determine the champion of the 2024 Melanesian Spearhead Group Prime Minister’s Cup.
In a high-stakes contest, the match went to a pulsating start. After 20 minutes of play, Rovu Boyers opened the score sheet for the hosts and 8 minutes later, skipper Alwin Komolong bagged an equalizer, locking the scores at 1 point apiece at the break.
A real tug-of-war was on display in the second stanza as both teams fought for territorial play and ball possession to break the deadlock. In the 70th minute, Solomon Rani scored the second goal for the visitors.
However, the celebration was short-lived as the home side returned the favor in the 88th minute through Don Keana to level the scores, pushing the game to extra time. The goals were tied at 2-all until the regulation time expired.
In the extra time, skipper Komolong picked up his brace through a sleek penalty free kick to ice the game, giving PNG a chance to fight for their second MSG Cup as they anticipate the match-up with Vanuatu this weekend.
