Updated: Apr 30

The Papua New Guinea (PNG) hockey team held their two-day team bonding session over the weekend of November 18th-19th, 2023, at the Sir John Guise Indoor Complex to emphasize the values of sportsmanship in preparation for the Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands.

In attendance were the national men's and women’s teams, along with assistants, staff, coaches, and managers.

The men's team coach, Sapau Tapo, said that the session was held to help athletes recognize their values and set the foundation that will strengthen them during the Pacific Games.

“We want to build confidence within the players so they can perform effectively in their matches during the Pacific Games," he said.

“We also talked about psychology, discussing important points on how elite players, coaches, and managers can deal with anxiety."

This session also served as a bonding experience for players to unite and work together, keeping the team spirit intact.

Furthermore, they discussed the importance of mental fitness, hydration and nutrition, advising athletes to recognize the roles these elements play in their physical fitness.

Additionally, athletes were encouraged to practice good leadership in order to lead as sports people and upstanding citizens, demonstrating good behaviors in their communities, as well as on the field.

Meanwhile, the team had a practical session on Sunday, November 20th, 2023, at the Hockey Pavilion where they worked on their team combinations, skills and techniques.

The team PNG Hockey will be departing for the Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands on Sunday, November 26th, 2023.
