Periwinkles edge Treasury in extra time

The Port Moresby Netball Association (POMNA) staged its Grand Final fixtures for divisions 1-9 on Saturday, August 31st, 2024, at the Rita Flynn Courts.

In the division 9 decider, the Periwinkles beat the Treasury team with a 25-20 scoreline in the extra time thriller. It was a very competitive grand final that went down to the wire.

From the first quarter to the final quarter, the two teams gave everything they had and put their bodies on the line, ending the match in a 11-all cliffhanger.

The Periwinkles tightened their grip in the extra time and shut down the Treasury side, triumphing with a gutsy 25-20 margin.

Although the Periwinkles did not field their full squad, with half of the players attending a bride price ceremony in the village, the fringe players took on the challenge and made their mark.

This was Periwinkles’ second premiership title, especially in the division 9 category. Their first premiership success in division 9 was in 2018.

Also, two other divisions of Periwinkles have made it to the grand final. The U10 division were victorious, but the division 3 unfortunately lost to the Sparrows.

Assistant coach, Sylvia Simon, was very pleased with the result and commended her girls for getting the job done against the strong Treasury outfit.

“I would say it’s a really good win for us. I am happy and lost for words. It’s a family club and I am happy with the result,” Simon said.
