Port Moresby Elite Basketball (PEB) competition is set to host finals this week Tuesday and Wednesday, as it winds down on its inaugural season.
Competition Director, Lawrence Lahari said despite a slow start, the competition gained momentum leading into the final round of the season.
“It's been a slow start but a really great build up in the last couple of games. Everyone is starting to get their mojo on and so the games as we witnessed over the last couple of weeks have been really close,” Lahari said.
Mr. Lahari mentioned that the inaugural season had registered five women’s and six men’s teams to participate in the elite competition.
“Unfortunately, one team in the women's division and two men's teams have been eliminated, but we are expecting a bumper crowd in the opening week of finals,” he added.
In the fight to secure minor premiership, the Amesii Basketball Club finished on top with both men’s and women’s teams, securing the Minor Premiership titles following their wins over the Tribes Coffee.
“It’s definitely a teaser. What we saw in the final round is what we’re expected to see in the finals, but I think the dark horses are the ACL Kings who have built on the experience as a young team,” Lahari said.
Both Amesii teams will face off the Tribes Coffee in the Major Semifinals at the Sir John Guise Stadium Indoor Complex and the winners will advance to the grand final, while the losing teams will be relegated to have another tip off in the preliminary finals.
Meanwhile, the Donald Kala-coached ACL Kings have a shot at finals and are expected to put up a strong competition against an experienced Togoba Coffee men’s side in the elimination final.
In a similar manner, the Saints women are left with a strong task against the Northwest Wizards as the losing team bows out of the season, while the winner advances into next week’s preliminary challenge.
“It’s a three week finals, so we are expecting a great crowd to turn up at the Sir John Guise Stadium Indoor complex,” Lahari said.
