NiuPower KMHL Sports Tok Rugby 7s Ready to Host 8th Edition

The highly-anticipated NiuPower KMHL Sports Tok Rugby 7s officially launched its eighth (8th) edition of the tournament last Friday (April 11th) at the Santos National Football Stadium (NFS) Club Lounge in Port Moresby.

Excitement is in the air as the Sports Tok Rugby 7s looks forward to hosting its annual tournament this weekend from April 18-20, 2025, with the first two days to be held at the Santos National Football Stadium (NFS) while the finals will be hosted at the Sir John Guise Stadium.

A total of 54 teams across the country ranging from the men’s and women’s divisions, including the U20s, are excited to entertain the fans while setting their sights on claiming the bragging rights in the three categories mentioned.

The Sports Tok Rugby 7s was established in 2018 with the support of Capital Rugby Union (CRU) and sanctioned by PNG Rugby Union (PNGRU). The tournament was initially started to create an avenue for budding rugby union players to showcase their skills and enjoy the game that is played in heaven.

A good number of raw talented rugby union players from across PNG have made their names through the Sports Tok 7s tournament and went on to represent the PNG Pukpuks on the international stage over the years.

One classic example is Derrick Voku, who came through the ranks and played for the national team, as well as making it to the PNG Hunters. The tournament focuses on identifying, unearthing, and exposing promising talents, giving the players a platform to market their skills.

Since its inception in 2018 to date, the tournament has been running successfully in partnership with a very good sponsorship from NiuPower Ltd, and it’s living up to the fans’ expectations. It has grown from strength to strength every year, making inroads in each edition. However, there’s still room for improvement.

To commemorate and celebrate PNG’s 50th Independence Anniversary (Golden Jubilee) this year, for the first time in the tournament’s history, two teams from Fiji (men & women) will be gracing the tourney and elevating the 7s format to another level.

This 8th edition is unlike the previous tournaments. It will be one of the biggest 7s events to be staged in the country, which promises to display three days of action-packed and thrilling rugby spectacle that will certainly keep the fans on the edge of their seats from the opening day to the decider.

As the clock ticks down, the players’ hearts are racing, with the supporters hyping up, and the participating teams showing eagerness to lock heads and battle for supremacy in their respective categories. The NiuPower KMHL Sports Toks Rugby 7s 8th edition is no ordinary tournament, aiming to live up to its name and adding significance to the thriving seven-a-side code.
