Newmont emerged victorious in the Corporate Softball Sevens Cup grand final, defeating the reigning champions, PNG Power Sparkies, with a score of 4-2 at Bisini-Diamond-1 in Port Moresby.
This significant event was organised by the Port Moresby Men's Softball Association (POMMSA) and took place on Sunday, March 24, 2023.
Newmont had an exceptional performance in both the first and second weekends of the tournament and continued their success in the final, dethroning the Sparkies.
Despite having a team composition with a mix of experienced and new players, Newmont managed to secure the win.
Newmonts team Captain Julieanna Paliau said that most of the players were new and didn't know much about softball.
“It was a good opportunity to network, team bond and at the same time was a learning experience.” said captain Paliau.
“It was really hard trying to get them (new players) to run bases but we came through and I am so proud of everyone.”
The Sparkies, with their experienced players, were unable to defend their title despite showcasing their best performances in the seven-inning final.
Both teams had opportunities to score runs, but Newmont's exceptional fielding was the key to their victory.
Newmont's outstanding fielding prevented their opponents from scoring and was also a major factor in their success.
In addition, Dylan Tavil's impressive pitching played a crucial role in leading the team to victory against the Sparkies. Tavil received the Most Valuable Player of the tournament award.
Ms. Paliau expressed their victory as overwhelming. They were so excited.
“Coming out in the grand and winning PNG Power Sparkies is unexpected. This is really awesome and a really good feeling.” “We look forward to coming back again.”
Paliau thanked the team and extended her gratitude to Newmont management for making it possible and allowing them to participate in the two-weekends tourney, and also thanked POMMSA for inviting them.
Congratulations to Newmont on their well-deserved win in the Corporate Softball Sevens Cup grand final!
