The Mono Mutrus Brothers pulled off a gallant 12-6 victory over the D8 Mosquitoes in the inaugural KCK Rigo Rice Cup Grand Final to claim the Leg One title on Sunday, January 19th, 2025, at Bava Park.

An intense and physical confrontation in the opening minutes saw the Brothers capitalize on the Mosquitoes’ mistake to open their account in the 5th minute. A few minutes later, the Mosquitoes returned the favor, and the seesawing affair continued in the ensuing sets, equalizing the scores at 6 points apiece in the break.

The arm wrestling reached its peak in the second stanza, with both sides putting their bodies on the line to claim the bragging rights. Under 10 minutes of play, the boys from Hohola (Mutrus Brothers) scored their second try to take a 12-6 lead.

Unbothered by the lead, the Mosquitoes tried to force a draw and send the decider to an extra time, but the eventual winners (Mutrus Brothers) defended their line valiantly, concluding the big dance in an epic 12-6 nail-biter.

Coach and team manager for the Mono Mutrus Brothers, Tonny Killi was over the moon, praising his boys for staying in the fight until the final whistle, and also acknowledged the organizers of the Rigo Rice Cup led by CEO, McSteve Polly and sponsor, Jeffrey Kennedy.

“Inside the field, one team has to win and one has to lose. I want to give credit to the players for being strong on the field and winning the leg one title,” coach/manager Killi said.

“Now that we’ve won the leg one title, we are shifting our focus to the big prize and look forward to staking our claim for the coveted title in March.

“I also want to thank the organizers and management of KCK Rigo Rice Cup for hosting a successful tournament.

“Through this tournament, our young boys have left drugs, alcohol, and other bad substances, focusing on playing rugby league.”

In addition, the Mono Mutrus Brothers walked away with a K10,000 cash prize, including 20 bags of Rigo Rice, while the runners-up (D8 Mosquitoes) also received a K5,000 consolation prize money, as well as 20 bags of Rigo Rice.

Furthermore, in the third and fourth placing curtain-raiser showdown, the Koita Cowboys edged out the Tare Nation with a gritty 4-0 win to finish third in the leg one pool, scooping a K3,000 cash prize and 20 bags of Rigo Rice.

Meanwhile, with the leg 1 teams (Brothers, Mosquitoes & Cowboys) securing their passes to the next stage, legs 2, 3, and 4 will also select their respective top 3 sides in the coming weeks, and the top 12 teams (3 in each leg) to compete for the ultimate K200,000 first prize in March.
