Hebou Mayawala, who made their maiden appearance in the 2024 Filipino Association of PNG Corporate Basketball League, stamped their authority in the decider and claimed the championship title following their gritty 71-69 victory over Triple B on Saturday, November 30th, 2024, at FAPNG Clubhouse in Port Moresby.
The Mayawala basketball team has been participating in a couple of competitions and tournaments over the years. However, taking part in the FAPNG Corporate Basketball League was the club’s rookie season, but they immediately put the competition on notice and snatched the envied trophy.
Mayawala’s point guard, Anderson Hewe’s efficiency on the court saw the talented ball handler scoop the player of the match honors, contributing significantly to his side’s achievement in bagging the prized silverware.
The Mayawala side had the services of skipper Collin Pine, Anderson Hewe, Jesse Pine, Mekere Tete, Willie Ipai, Andy Ais, and the ever-reliable Opex Kima. Hewe’s outstanding performance was complemented by his teammates, who also played exceptionally well to claim the bragging rights.
Jeffery Kandi, who has carried the legacy from his late fathers Paul Limpia and Aisoli Andia over the years through the Mayawala basketball club, was overwhelmed with joy after the full-time siren. Kandi acknowledged the sponsor, players, and loyal supporters for their unwavering support, helping Mayawala to cap off the 2024 season with a bang.
“I am at a loss for words and happy to continue the legacy of my fathers. We’ve had a very challenging season but the boys stuck together and played as a team, finally finishing the year on a positive note. I thank our major sponsor Hebou, the players, including the fans for a successful season,” Kandi stated.
The Mayawala team isn’t new to tasting success, as the club won the National Souths Basketball League (NSBL) tournament four times, and claiming the FAPNG title adds to the list of achievements in the club's stacked trophy cabinet.
The Hebou Mayawala lads came on a mission and accomplished their goal and look forward to making their presence known again next season, and hopefully retaining their title for the second consecutive year (2024-2025).
