The SP PNG Hunters goal-kicking ace and chief playmaker, Jamie Mavoko, who missed 2 games last season due to injury, has made his return to the starting line-up and is poised to lead the Hunters in round 2 of the Queensland Rugby League (QRL) Hostplus Cup on Saturday, March 15th, 2025.
With the absence of five-eight Joshua Lau, who has been ruled out of this season due to an ACL injury, Jamie Mavoko will have a new combination in the halves department, partnering a highly touted youngster, Gairo Voro.
Though Mavoko has returned from injury and with the new combination in the halves, the soft-spoken playmaker mentioned that he had built good chemistry with Voro and looked forward to steering the pack.
“Gairo is a talented player. We will not play fancy footy, but stick to our game plan and have good communication on the field,” Mavoko said.
“I know it’s going to be a tough game against the Falcons because we have a rivalry with them since 2017, so we are looking forward to it.”
The Falcons boast some of the big-name NRL players like Nelson Asofa Solomona and Su’a Fa’alogo, but Mavoko said the Hunters were up for the challenge.
The round 1 squad remains unchanged, with three players set to make their debut. Despite the minor setback in round 1, Mavoko and his troops are positive to register their first win of the season.
Meanwhile, the Paul Aiton-coached men left for Australia on Friday (March 14th) and will face the Falcons at Sunshine Coast Stadium this afternoon.
