Mantas Start Strong

Updated: Dec 16, 2024

The Mantas rugby union team has gone onto a flying start in the third leg of the Gerehu Firelight 7s tournament at the Sir John Guise Stadium, bagging two wins and topping their pool.

Most of the Mantas boys play for the SWG Enterprise Valley Hunters, who recently claimed the 2024 Pepsi Moni Plus Capital Rugby Union (CRU) competition.

The senior boys left for holidays and other commitments while the juniors, led by Ishmael Sabatha, are coming out of the shadows of their seniors to make their mark in the three-day tourney.

Young Sabatha mentioned that they were sticking to the basics and playing a simple game plan, taking one game at a time. He admitted that there are a couple of strong contenders, who are as hungry as them to fight for the bragging rights.

“Though we've won two games, there's still more work to be done. We've got some tough oppositions like the Newton Chiefs, Creek Rhinos, Gerehu Natives, etc.,” captain Sabatha said.

“We'll stick to the basics and execute our game plan. We have a very young side with a few experienced players, but we are confident of our abilities to be the best in this tournament.”

Following their dominant victories over Juggernauts and Vanumile, the Mantas are looking forward to their final match against the Jokers at 5 O'clock this afternoon.
