Lae City FC were down on 1 point and made a late comeback to stun Hekari United FC with a 2-1 win in their round 14 clash of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) competition on Saturday, October 19th, 2024, at Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby.
The rivalry match between Lae City and Hekari lived up to its billing, with the boys from ‘Rainy Lae’ who came on a mission and edged the undefeated table toppers on their home turf.
The defending champions, Hekari scored the opening goal in just under ten minutes of play. After that goal, it was an arm wrestle until half time, leaving the score at 1-0.
Unfazed by the lead, Lae City regrouped and put on a much better performance in the second half, scoring 2 goals and taking Hekari off guard.
With this gritty triumph over the competition leaders, the Morobean franchise have secured themselves a top-4 finish and will have a rematch with Hekari in the semi-final on Saturday, October 26th.
Despite the loss, Hekari were crowned the Minor Premiers and booked their spot in the 2025 Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Championship.
