The highly-anticipated Lae Biscuit Pawa 9s tournament was officially launched on Tuesday, December 17th, with games to be played today (December 18th) at the Lae Rugby League Ground.
The Lae Biscuit Pawa 9s tournament was established in 2014 and has been running successfully over the years, unearthing and giving exposure to the raw rugby league talents living in Morobe's capital and outside of the province.
To commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Lae Biscuit Pawa 9s tournament, a women’s division has been included for the first time to run alongside the men’s division from December 18 to 22, 2024.
Teams confirmed to participate in the tournament features 32 men’s sides and 12 women’s teams, who are ready to battle for five days of thrilling rugby league in the heart of the ‘Industrial City’.
Both divisions have been grouped into pools, with each team to play three games before qualifying for the finals. Rounds 1 and 2 will be played today, elimination rounds will be held from Thursday to Saturday (December 19-21), and finals on Sunday, December 22.
With big prize money up for grabs in both divisions, the players will put their bodies on the line. Men’s first prize is K20,000, second prize is K10,000, third prize is K6,000, and fourth prize is K4,000.
For the women’s division, the winner walks away with K9,000, the runner-up gets K6,000, the third prize is K3,000, and the fourth place scoops K1,000.
The Lae Biscuit Company has been proudly sponsoring the 9s tourney for ten years. The continued sponsorship of the 9s tournament underscores the company’s commitment to developing rugby league and creating pathways for emerging talents across the country.
The Pawa 9s event is also supported by various business houses in Lae, such as the Prima Smallgoods, Raumai 18, and Seeto Kui.
Meanwhile, the Lae Biscuit Pawa 9s tournament plays a pivotal role in serving as a key selection platform for the Lae Snax Tigers’ 2025 squad.
