Koboni managed to escape the fast-finishing Bomana Cats with a significant score margin of 55-22 in game 10 of round 2 of the Port Moresby Australian Football League (POM AFL) Competition on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Colts Oval in Port Moresby.
Koboni started strong in the first quarter, scoring 20 points from 3 goals and 2 behinds, while the Cats scored 7 points (1 goal and 1 behind). However, the Cats almost caught up in the second quarter.
The Cats scored 2 goals and 2 behinds, closing the gap to 21-23, as Koboni struggled to maintain their conversions and scored at least 3 behinds. This added pressure to Koboni.
Nevertheless, Koboni regrouped and dominated the third quarter, scoring 2 goals and 4 behinds to extend their lead to 39 points, while the Cats only managed 1 behind, bringing their total to 22 points.
In the final quarter, Koboni continued their strong performance, scoring 2 goals and 4 behinds, securing the victory at 55. The Cats scored 1 goal and 1 behind, finishing at 29.
Koboni’s Coach, Vagi Lai Kepa, expressed pride in the team for putting up a solid challenge despite facing obstacles.
“The boys played well today, despite challenges such as training and attendance issues. We faced difficulties but aimed to win the match, and we succeeded,” said Kepa.
Kepa also said that the boys picked up well in their combinations and performances, despite making changes in their lineup.
He further stressed on the importance of taking training seriously, stating that their focus now is to commit to their weekly training schedules to maintain their fitness level.
“We have four more matches before the finals, so it is crucial for us to stay focused. I told the boys after the game that we must be dedicated to training if we want to reach the finals this year,” coach Kepa said.
