Karanas Mixed Martial Arts Academy Affiliates With World Taekwondo Organization

Updated: 2 days ago

The Karanas Mixed Martial Arts Academy (KMMA) in New Ireland Province has recently been affiliated with the International Dragon Full-Contact Self-Defense Sports Federation. This is an international organization that specializes in various martial arts - full-contact taekwondo and full-contact karate. The KMMA is a sanctioned organization being recognized by the international body.

The International Dragon Full-Contact Self-Defense Sports Federation is headed by Grand Master Adnan Karasakal, who is a 10th Dan in all the martial arts mentioned above, and he is a highly ranked martial artist in Turkey. He is also the founder and president of the organization.

Byron Chan, former MP for Namatanai, was appointed as the President of the World Taekwondo Organization. Chan is not new to martial arts as he was once a fighter in his heyday, taking part in various disciplines and making his name.

President Chan expressed his appreciation to Grand Master Karasakal and other Grand Masters, including the International Taekwondo Federation for giving him the blessings to lead the newly established organization in PNG and becoming a life member of the organization.

“Let me say that I’m very honored and pleased to represent PNG in this international organization. It has been some time now coming that we are now affiliated with a big international organization,” he stressed.

“The International Dragon Full-Contact Self-Defense Sports Federation under Grand Master Karasakal has fully endorsed me, and I’m a lifetime member of the organization. Grand Master and his board have endorsed me - I’ve got karate, taekwondo, and aikido certificates, including all the other necessary documentation required to hold the position as the National President.”

Mr. Chan clarified that he didn’t break away from the PNG Taekwondo Federation, but the purpose of affiliating with the international organization was to adapt to the changing times, as well as giving more exposure and opportunities to the raw martial arts talents in the country.

“I have moved on from the traditional masters and am trying to adapt to the evolving martial arts in this day and age. There’s still a learning process. The grand masters have gone through 50 years of martial arts, and I’m just a middle class or middle-weight to them,” he emphasized.

“We are venturing into new territories. Everything is evolving and we just have to evolve with the changing times. Karate and taekwondo have come to this time where there are a lot of changes and progress, so we are just progressing with everyone else.

“I’m just preparing our boys, certifying them, and getting them into international organizations so that they can be recognized internationally and fight internationally in any categories or weight divisions.”

He also acknowledged the unwavering support of New Ireland Governor, Grand Chief Sir Julius Chan, who has been the number one supporter of the martial arts code for over three decades, as well as appreciating Ambassadors Dusava and Sumasi for their support.

“Governor Sir Julius has been our patron and main sponsor for the last 30 years. He has been there supporting us. Not only myself but all the martial artists in New Ireland, including the current MP for Namatanai, Walter Schnaubelt,” Chan revealed.

“This is just a testament to his support that we are progressing and moving on. We are not leaving PNG Taekwondo, but we are venturing into new territories. Everything is evolving, so we just have to evolve with the times.

“I’ve received the full acknowledgment from our Ambassadors Dusava and Sumasi, including Governor Chan. I thank them for their support. They have always been there supporting us and our activities.”

In addition, the World Taekwondo Organization in PNG is headed by President Byron Chan, Vice President Steven Tommy, and two board members, Lincoln and Lindoln Chan. President Chan has faith and belief in these young martial artists to help him deliver and implement the programs of the new organization next year and into the future.

Meanwhile, the newly established World Taekwondo Organization in PNG will host a couple of tournaments next year, according to President Byron Chan. Mr. Chan said the door is open to anyone who wishes to register or partner with the new organization next year and going forward.
