Highlands Tailoring Ltd Open Men's team are the 2024 champions following their 6-5 win over KKB Limited during the Kainantu Corporate Touch Football Inc. Grand Final on Sunday, December 8th, 2024.
President Elmo Pasiro said it was a show of class for the open men’s competition displayed at the Kainantu Primary School field on Sunday, with Highlands coming out as winners.
“Highlands trailed at half-time when KKB Ltd took the lead in the finals, however, they picked pace in the second half to level the scores at full-time,” Pasiro said.
“As per the match rules, the final match was forced in a drop-off game, which saw highlands come out as winners, scoring the tie breaker.”
The finals matches played earlier, it was a battle between the East-10 Engineering Ltd and Arkau Coffee Open Mix and Women's matches.
East-10 women defeated Arkau 6-4 while the open mix had another tense drop-off match that saw East-10 win by a point of 7-6 in the finals.
“Arkau was the club to watch in the finals, having two of their teams make it into the finals. However, Highlands & East-10 teams were also a better side in these finals,” he said.
President Pasiro said what a season it had been for them, despite a few delays in running their competition.
“We had a slow start to run our competitions due to the availability of fields used to run competitions this year, however, we finally managed to pull this off and complete a great season,” said the president.
“On behalf of our association, we would like to extend our gratitude to the following teams that competed in the competition: KKB Ltd; Arkau Coffee; Arokara Coffee; Highlands Tailoring; Kisim Save Facilitating Center; Agri-Solutions; Eastern Engineering; and Royals.
“A special acknowledgement to East-10 Engineering Managing Director Enoch Iyanofi for his support in providing a 25-seater bus to bring our selected players to the national championship in Lae this month.”
Meanwhile, Pasiro confirmed that Kainantu would be taking about nine divisions to the National Touch Championships set for Lae next week, this is inclusive of junior, open and senior/master teams.
“We did selections prior to our competition finals, so those teams that didn’t make the finals, their players started training for the NTCs,” he said.
“An added bonus was having most of our players represent Kainantu District in the recent Highlands Regional Youth Games in Goroka, so we are looking forward to the championship.”
