Ume to Fight in Paris Olympics


PNG's top boxer and Olympian John Ume is set to make the 7th men of the final Team PNG after he was invited to compete in the 63.5kg category for boxing at the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games.


The Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) confirmed the final Team PNG Paris 2024 in a media release, stating that this opportunity and invitation arose following the withdrawal of an athlete from another country, allowing Papua New Guinea to fill in the vacant spot.


The 27-year- old Kairuku lad is a seasoned athlete and Olympian, who had previously represented PNG at the 2020 Summer Olympics and has a gold medal under his belt from the 2019 Pacific Games. He also showcased his skills at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.


Ume's appointment alongside coach Peter Morrison to the Paris 2024 Olympic Game is a welcomed addition to the current crop of athletes on route to Paris. With this addition, the total number of athletes representing Team PNG at the Paris 2024 Olympics rises to 7. They will compete across 5 sports: Athletics, Taekwondo, Swimming, Weightlifting, and now Boxing.


The Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee expresses its gratitude for the opportunity to allow the inclusion of one more athletes, John Ume, in the boxing category. The PNGOC also extends its best wishes to the athletes and coaches on their journey and success in representing Papua New Guinea at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The Olympics will start on the Friday 27th July - August 11.
