The inaugural Momase Regional Youth Games kicked off today (25th September 2023), marking a historical start with the theme "Unity in Diversity: Celebrating Our Region's Strength" for the Momase region. The weeklong event unfolds at Laiwaden Oval, Madang Province.
Officiating at the opening ceremony were Madang Governor Hon. Ramsey Pariwa MP, Hon. Jason Peter MP for Huon Gulf, PNG Sports Foundation CEO Albert Veratau and his team, Regional Youth Games Council Chairman and Director General Mr. Joe Itaki, Officials and Athletes representatives from participating teams.
The participating provincial teams are East Sepik, Morobe, and the host province, Madang. West Sepik did not participate.
The game will run for six days and end on Sunday 30th, September 2023.
The event started with a traditional Garamut beating called; 'Singaut blo bung', signalling the public about the official opening, followed by teams and officials' parade starting at Smugglers Inn Junction on Modilon road, with singing groups from Haus Tumbuna leading the sport's participants into Laiwaden Oval followed by the arrival of the guests and official opening of the games.
The Tumbuna Tracks team, Haus Tumbuna, and Demas Saul entertained the crowds.
Meanwhile, representing team Morobe are five Districts: Bulolo, Wau-Waria, Huon Gulf, Nawaeb, and Markham.
