Hunters inconsistency leaves a lot to be desired

The SP PNG Hunters started their 2024 Queensland Rugby League (QRL) Hostplus Cup opener on a good footing at home soil but struggled to win away games, which is very concerning for the rookie coach, Paul Aiton and his coaching staff, including the management, sponsors and fans alike.

While the Hunters have a good record on home soil, they have struggled to win away games in recent years. It’s been an ongoing problem for the SP Brewery-sponsored franchise. They need a strategic game plan immediately to end this worrying cycle.

The Hunters have registered two wins, tasted four losses and had a bye. They are sitting in 12th position with 6 points in the 15-team QRL Hostplus Cup competition. They are struggling to come out of the rabbit hole and make their presence known.

With the recruitment of promising talents in the pre-season, coupled with a few experienced campaigners and new coaching staff this season, everyone expected the Hunters to improve their performance this year and end the seven-year finals drought. However, their declining performance every round is a grave cause for concern.

If anything, the way the Hunters are playing, it looks like they will have another rollercoaster season filled with disappointments and setbacks. The one-time premiers have a big season ahead to prove themselves and show their premiership credentials.

Coach Aiton and his troops are under immense pressure to deliver results and turn their season around. It’s going to be an uphill battle but the players need to do soul-searching, find their groove and stake their claim for the coveted title.

Despite losing consecutive matches, especially the away games, Aiton is adamant in maintaining the same lineup but making a few adjustments in the backline. He still has faith and confidence in the players to prove everyone wrong and stamp their mark.

The Hunters will travel to Townsville to face the 11th placed Townsville Blackhawks in their round 8 clash on Sunday, May 5th. This is a must-win game for the PNG-outfit to change the tide and keep their season alive.
