The SP PNG Hunters made a strong start to their 2024 campaign by beating the Ipswich Jets with an 18-4 victory in their first trial match on Saturday, February 10th, at Ipswich Reserve, west of Brisbane, Australia.
The wet condition didn’t help either side. The Jets were first to score through Paul Iopu in the 30th minute with an unsuccessful conversion, taking a 4-0 lead.
A couple of minutes later, the Hunters responded with a 4-pointer through Joshua Mire. Sakias Komati added the extras successfully, leaving the half-time score at 6-4.
The Paul-Aiton coached side got things under control in the second half, as versatile outside back, Sonny Wabo, bagged two tries to give the visitors their first trial win over the home side.
Despite missing a few key players, coach Paul Aiton was proud of his men, who did well in the wet condition to start their campaign with a win.
“I was really pleased with our effort today (Saturday, February 10th),” the former PNG International said.
