Papua New Guinea Lewas cricketer, Henao ‘Jean’ Thomas, has made history as the first local to sign with the Brisbane Heat in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) competition in Australia.
A right-handed batter and right-arm off-spin, the 22-year-old is breaking boundaries for female cricketers in the country, joining a well-renowned and the biggest T20-International domestic competition in Australia.
Thomas said, “I am so excited for the opportunity to join the Brisbane Heat as a WBBL associate rookie.
“Looking forward to working with the players and staff to learn a lot and to improve my game, and also to enjoy the experience.”
Known for her remarkable gift with the ball, Thomas has been exceptional in Papua New Guinea women’s cricket since her international debut in July 2019.
Born March 6th, 2002, Thomas has made significant strides in her young career, proving a key player for the national team.
Jean-Jean, as she is affectionately known by her teammates and family, has been playing for the Poreporena United Cricket, a local club in Port Moresby.
She was instrumental in contributing to their grand final achievement over Raukele Cricket Club in the Port Moresby Cricket Association competition, winning by a 146-run margin.
Her contribution and commitment to the PNG Lewas team was pivotal, boasting a confidence and determination that empowers a team and inspires her community.
Thomas' selection by the Brisbane Heat to play in the WWBL in Australia is an achievement in itself, making her the first Papua New Guinean female cricketer to play at the highest level of cricket in Australia.
Meanwhile, the Lewas head coach, David Drew said this was a great initiative from Cricket Australia, with Thomas expected to gain experience from some of the greatest cricketers in the tournament.
“This is a wonderful initiative from Cricket Australia, WBBL, and Brisbane Heat,” Drew said of the rising female cricket star.
“Henao will learn a great deal and be better for the experience. She is a talented player who is always willing to improve and in the Heat environment, I am sure she will thrive.”
Thomas departed for Australia last week and is settling well in Brisbane with the 2024-25 WBBL competition now underway.
