The unbeaten Hekari United FC showcased their championship credentials by blowing the rudderless Allies FC off the park with a comprehensive 9-0 victory during the quarter-final clash of the Southern Region Women’s Conference Soccer League (WCSL) competition on Saturday, February 1st, 2025, at PNG Football Stadium in Port Moresby.
Following their decisive win over the Allies, Hekari booked their spot in the semi-final and will face the Central Bougainville FC (winner of NGI-Eastern Region) on Saturday, February 8th, in Port Moresby.
The merciless competition heavyweights (Hekari) revved their engine in the first half and registered 6 unanswered goals, taking a comfortable 6-0 lead over the Hapless Allies girls at the break.
In the second half, the girls in red lost their mojo and the Allies had their chances but failed to turn those opportunities into points, with Hekari managing to net 3 more goals, bringing their tally to 9 goals and securing the semi-final berth.
Pitch general Ramona Padio bagged a treble, while Assaiso Gossi and prolific goal scorer Marie Kaipu picked up the brace, followed by Phyllis Pala and Mavis Singara, who scored a goal each to pull off a resounding win.
Coach Erick Komeng admitted that the Allies FC were prepared for the task after meeting them twice in the normal rounds, so they had to strategize and work hard as a team to secure their place in the semi-final.
“After playing the Allies two times in the normal round, we knew that they would come strong. We had to dig deep and work on a few things to prepare us for this game,” Komeng said.
“The thing that got us through was our team effort and fitness level. At the back of our minds, we knew it was going to be a tough game, but I’m glad the girls played as a team and got the job done.”
The red-hot MRDC-backed Hekari United FC are upbeat to meet the Central Bougainville FC in the semi-final showdown on Saturday, February 8th, at PNG Football Stadium in Port Moresby, with the grand final slated for next Saturday, February 15th, in the nation's capital.
Meanwhile, the Lae City Dwellers belted the FC Morobe Wawens on the weekend (February 1st) with a 4-0 win, and will represent the Northern Region to play the winner of the Highlands Region in the semi-final blockbuster.
