Team Eastern Highlands Boxing claimed two silver medals at the 2024 KMHL National Boxing Championship in Port Moresby on Wednesday, December 4th.
Only two male boxers, Martin Borseto (51kg) and Shorty Peter (63.5kg) were in attendance following their participation at the Taurama Aquatic & Indoor Centre.
Coach Toksy Seteme said, “Winning medals is a plus but we still need to work extra hard as boxing is becoming very competitive in the country.”
Seteme, an experienced PNG professional boxer, said though it wasn’t their first time to compete in the nationals, their level of participation had dropped due to challenges.
“Unfortunately, boxing has been dying out in the province due to our inactive participation in local competitions. However, we have been trying to run as many as we can to revive amateur boxing,” he said.
“Currently, we have a small competition back home for the ‘Toksy Seteme’ Cup for our cadet boxers who just started their journey.”
He added that they planned to bring nine boxers to the championships but due to the limited funds, they were able to bring only two fighters.
“We initially planned to bring 9 boxers but unfortunately, dropped our five females and two male boxers and brought the experienced boxers over to compete due to financial constraints,” Seteme said.
“The boxing level has been changing, and on the level of competition we have just participated in shows that we need to work extra hard and bring in more boxers in the future.”
Meanwhile, Seteme thanked the EHP Sports Authority, Unggai-Bena DDA, Thunder Builders Ltd, and families here in Port Moresby who came to support team EHP from December 2-4 during the 2024 KMHL National Boxing Championship.
