Duo splashes off to the Olympics

Swimming duo, Josh Tarere and Georgia-Leigh Vele, have qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics in the 100m and 50m freestyle, respectively.

Josh made his debut this year at the 2024 World Championships in Doha, Qatar, clocking in a personal best of 29.29 seconds.

Josh had earned himself a spotlight far from his rugby union family. Josh’s brother and father had represented PNG internationally by playing for the Pukpuks’ team.

Meanwhile, Georgia is an elite swimmer, who represented Papua New Guinea competitively across countries like Great Britain, Japan, Samoa, and Korea. She debuted at the World Aquatics Championship in 2019 in Korea.

The talented athlete, whose father is of Papua New Guinean and Rotuman heritage, is also a sports trainer and coach. The skill for swimming runs in her blood, as she is the fifth person in the family to represent Papua New Guinea internationally in swimming.

Josh will be contesting the 100m freestyle on day 4 of the swimming program on July 30th and Georgia-Leigh will be competing in the 50m freestyle on day 8 of August 3rd.
