Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup Teams Preview

As the 2024 Digicel-ExxonMobil (DEM) Cup season heads toward the pointy end of the regular rounds, the 12 participating teams have upped their tempo and hit their straps running in anticipation to secure a top 6 berth in the playoffs. The DEM Cup has been very intense and unpredictable this season, with four points separating the top 6 teams. This year has been competitive and exciting to watch, as the 12 clubs battle for supremacy.

The meteoric rise of Wamp Nga Mount Hagen Eagles from wooden spooners to serious contenders; the consistency of Lae Snax Tigers and ENB Agmark Gurias; the imposing presence of KMHL Enga Mioks; the unheralded birth of the Gas Resources Central Dabaris; the unpredictable PRK Mendi Muruks, Kroton Hela Wigmen, Asila Waghi Tumbe, Bintangor Goroka Lahanis, Kimbe Cutters, and Moni Plus NCDC Port Moresby Vipers; and the disappointing PRK Gulf Isou - make this season more intriguing to watch.

Seven months ago, the Eagles were sitting at the bottom of the ladder, struggling to string wins. Their 2023 season went from bad to worse, which eventually saw them get the wooden spoon. However, how the Eagles soared and turned the tide around this season has been nothing short of incredible to watch. Like a phoenix, the Mt Hagen franchise rose from the ashes and stamped their authority this year.

Since entering the semi-professional competition, the Tigers and Gurias have been consistent and formidable sides. Every year, these two sides would play finals. This year is no exception for them. They have been dominating the intercity competition over the last decade or so. Though the Morobean lads and East side blokes have had turbulent seasons respectively, they are still a force to be reckoned with.

The Mioks’ elevation to prominence last season was one of the best runs the Engan franchise ever had in their club’s history. They broke their 22-year title drought and marched on to premiership glory undefeated. The Mioks came with all guns blazing and took the competition by storm last season, etching their names into the annals of PNG Rugby Football League folklore.

Lo and behold, the resurgent form of Dabaris has stunned everyone. They are one of the exciting teams to watch. Thanks to trainer-turned coach Solomon Kuluniasi, who assembled a strong side to make their presence felt in 2024. The Central team could be a dark-horse for the coveted trophy.

The Muruks, Wigmen, Tumbe, Vipers, Cutters, and Lahanis have not really shown their premiership credentials. With the exception of Wigmen and Lahanis, the four teams mentioned are forever married to hope but divorce from reality. They started the season strong but slowly fading away toward the backend of the season. They must shape up or get shipped out. The ball is in their court.

Disappointingly, the hapless Isou are struggling to register a single win. A few wins came begging in their several matches, but they couldn’t finish it off. They have fallen from grace. The good news is that the Isou have fielded a very young side to prepare them for the long-term. They may have struggled this season, but they will be a team to watch in the near future. The PRK-sponsored franchise ‘short-term pain for long-term gain’ approach will bear fruits in the not-too-distant future.

The Eagles have put on a show; the Tigers and Gurias are slowly getting their grip; the Mioks are turning the screws on; the Dabaris keep soaring; the Muruks, Wigmen, Tumbe, Lahanis, Cutters, and Vipers are not out of touch; while the Isou take a downward spiral.

Sit tight, fasten your seat belts, and get ready to enjoy the remaining games of the 2024 Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup, as the 12 teams rise to the occasion to fight for a spot in the playoffs. The two final rounds of the regular season promise to showcase true rugby league bonanza. Prepare your popcorn and be ready to get entertained.
