Former PNG Hunters goalkicking ace and current Lae Snax Tigers coach, Noel Zeming, says the four-day Digicel-ExxonMobil Cup Football Conference, which started yesterday (February 6th) at Holiday Inn and will end on Sunday, February 9th, is enriching and refreshing, especially from a coach’s perspective.
The four-day workshop is supported and run by the Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition (PNG NRLC) officials to upskill the coaches, trainers, team managers, and medical doctors of the 12 participating clubs in the semi-professional competition.
This is the biggest conference of its kind, attracting over 90 participants across the 12 franchises. The theme of the conference is ‘Building Better Clubs’ in anticipation of producing quality players and preparing them to play for the PNG team when it enters the NRL competition in 2028.
Tony Archer, the General Manager of Pathways & Performance and Joe Grima, Head of PNG NRL Academy Development Pathways, including a couple of PNG NRLC staff, are facilitating the seminar to equip the participants with the necessary coaching, training, medical, and management skills.
Zeming expressed that the first day of the workshop had been an eye-opening experience for him and other participants, acknowledging the board of PNG NRLC & PNGRFL for staging the seminar and looking forward to learning more in the next three days.
“This football conference is good for us, the coaches. Last year, only the coaches attended the workshop, but it's good to see the assistant coaches attend it this year,” he stated.
“I think we are on the right track with what the PNG NRLC and PNGRFL are doing, getting the coaches to attend such conferences and updating our coaching skills. It has made our job easier.
“Thank you to CEO Stanley Hondina, Tony Archer, Joe Grima, and other staff members of PNG NRLC & PNGRFL for hosting this conference. We’ve learned a lot of things. We play the game and coach, but there’s still things to learn.”
