Demetriou Confident of PNG PM’s XIII Team

The newly appointed PNG Kumuls coach, Jason Demetriou, says he is very positive about the PNG side that they have assembled to play against Australia in the annual Prime Minister’s XIII fixture slated for Sunday, October 13th, 2024, at Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby.

Demetriou, who was the former South Sydney Rabbitohs coach, has confidence and faith in the squad that he and the selectors have fielded to face the Australian juggernauts on Sunday.

Speaking to the media at Stanley Hotel on Friday, October 11th, Demetriou said he was fortunate to get the nod from PNGRFL to coach PNG.

“It's hard to put it into words. I've been really fortunate in my career but to be here, coaching these boys and representing PNG is pretty special,” Demetriou remarked about the opportunity given to him to lead PNG in the PM's XIII and Pacific Championships.

“I've been spending some time here over the last couple of weeks and it's becoming more apparent to me what rugby league and the jersey means to these boys, so I'm looking forward to leading them on Sunday.”

Despite Australia naming a very young side, Demetriou admitted that PNG must not take them lightly, as Australia is still the undisputed champions in rugby league.

Coach Demetriou and the PNG side are looking forward to meeting the formidable Australian young behemoth pack at the spiritual home of PNG's rugby league field tomorrow.
