The Capital Rugby Union (CRU) officially launched its 2025 season on Wednesday night (April 2nd) at the Yacht Club in Harbor City after five thrilling rounds of preseason games, which ended last Saturday, March 29th.
The event was attended by various sponsors of the CRU competition, including players, coaches, and representatives of the nine clubs that will be participating in the 2025 season.
Most teams from last season, ranging from the U20 Division to Premier Division, have retained their spots while one of the foundation clubs Kone Sharks made their return after exiting the competition almost 15 years ago.
Despite PNG Rugby Union (PNGRU) being further suspended by Oceania Rugby for another three months, the Pepsi-sponsored CRU competition is ready to begin its 2025 campaign.
Round one was initially planned to commence today (Saturday, April 5th). However, due to the bad weather conditions, all round 1 games have been postponed to next weekend from April 12-13.
CRU President Kori Chan has assured the sponsors and stakeholders that despite the suspension of PNG Rugby Union, the top competition in the nation’s capital would remain committed to exposing talented players and delivering another successful season.
Mr. Chan acknowledged the sponsors of CRU, the Pacific Industry under its Pepsi brand, Moni Plus, Vodafone, and Niu Power for their support last year and this year as well.
Although the opening round has been canceled, it gives enough time for both the men’s and women’s divisions to prepare well and finalize their teams for next weekend (April 12) when the proper season of the 2025 Pepsi CRU competition kicks off.
