The PNG Boxing Union has sent in 60 boxers for its first screening and testing for Team PNG athletes, along with its development squads, in preparation for the 2024 events calendar at Taurama Aquatic Centre today.
The testing and screening include Musculoskeletal Screening, Functional Movement Screening, and Mental Screening.
"We have PNG Boxers and the Development Squad here at the Aquatic Centre. Basically, they are going through screening and testing to identify injuries and ensure they are well-prepared before engaging in High-Performance Training Programs," said High-Performance Sport PNG Manager Cornelius M. Papau.
"Most of these athletes/boxers are going through the screening process to make sure they are well-prepared before gym sessions," Papau said.
"Boxing has a busy calendar for this year and next year, so they are here to prepare the development squads, including the elite boxers. They have Oceania Championships coming up for both seniors and juniors, men and women. Some events are qualifiers for the Olympics, and there is also the Kokoda Cup, which they annually have with Australian boxers," he said.
"We are happy to support boxing and ensure these athletes are fit and ready to fight," he added.
Meanwhile, with the first list coming out this week for testing, according to Team PNG Head Coach Mark Keto, more testing still needs to be done as training continues in preparation for upcoming tournaments as outlined in the 2024 PNG BU events calendar.
"The long list is for Testing and Screening for High Performance. These are criteria to be part of the team for future purposes. It's a long list for screening and testing but not the final list for Team PNG.
"After screening and testing, they will go through processes such as squad training, and then we will screen them again for sport specifics, sparring, fitness, discipline-wise, and attendance, among others. Then, we will make final selections for the upcoming events for Team PNG," clarified Team PNG Head Coach Mark Keto.
The boxers who attended the screening and testing today are Team PNG athletes and selected boxers for the development squads. The development squads consist of boxers representing provinces around PNG who have trained under their respective boxing clubs such as The Maikuna Team, Raka Boxing Club, Defense Boxing Club, Original Mix Blood (OMB) of Porebada Village, to name a few. Most of these clubs came out from the NCD Amateur Boxing Association (ABA), which has been instrumental in holding tournaments that have paved the way forward for the boxers.
