The Basketball Federation of PNG will be hosting its 3x3 zone trials in Port Moresby this weekend following the conclusion of the All-Stars National Championship in Goroka a few days ago.
PNG 3x3 coach Nick Daroa said this trial was crucial as they prepare to finalize a national team when Team PNG sends a contingent to compete at the 2025 Mini Pacific Games in Palau.
“We sent our teams out to conduct the 3x3 tournament trials in all four regions (zone trials) and identified who will travel into Port Moresby for the trials and from there, we will recruit and submit our list for justification,” Daroa said.
He said there would be two different 3x3 events as PNG eyes FIBA’s 3x3 Asia Cup in Singapore next year.
“This is a good lead-up for our 3x3 national team, which is open. However, for the Palau Games, we are required to recruit fresh talents that include athletes within the U23 age range,” he added.
“Apart from the 3x3 regional tournament, we will also look at the teams that are participating in Goroka, and then hopefully a couple more stars can be identified and then they will be invited for the zone trials.”
He said following the trials, the board would put together a training squad of 10-12 players per division and later trim the numbers down during training.
“From there, we trim it down to the final four men and four women and they fly off with their appointed coaches as part of the Team PNG contingent,” Daroa said.
Meanwhile, BFPNG President David Peter said the board was prepared and would be in full support to ensure final teams are prepared for Team PNG’s participation at the Palau Games come 2025.
