BFPNG Reveals Plans for 2025

The Basketball Federation of Papua New Guinea (BFPNG) is looking at an eventful calendar as it makes plans to send its 3x3 and 5x5 national teams to several FIBA-sanctioned tournaments in the region.

President David Peter said so far they had confirmed five regional or international competitions where PNG’s elite teams are expected to make appearances while the junior team's events will be confirmed in their 2025 calendar.

This follows after the 2024 Kumul Minerals Holdings Ltd-sponsored All-Stars National Championship that was held in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province, last week.

“For PNG teams, we want to see the best talents, hence the selections we undertake within are for about five different international competitions lined up for PNG starting next year 2025,” Peter said.

“This includes the 3x3 FIBA Asia Cup in Singapore, the Pacific Mini Games in Palau (3x3), and then we have the 5x5 Melanesia Cup in the Solomon Islands around October.

“We also have to plan ahead for the next Pacific Games and Commonwealth Games, should we qualify.”

Peter said plans would also be in place if PNG was required to send the junior national teams to any upcoming Oceania-FIBA championship, despite missing out this year due to the change of office.

“If there are any junior competitions, we'd like to send our junior players. Our vision to be the best in the Pacific is really about developing and identifying talents across the country,” Peter mentioned.

“We'd like as much as possible to give everyone an opportunity to showcase themselves, especially for our young players to be the future of basketball.”

Meanwhile, a formal BFPNG calendar will be released by early 2025 to confirm all domestic and international events for the code.
