Among talented athletes competing at the 2024 PNG Air National Athletics Track and Field Championships slated from December 5-7 at the Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby, Calvert Avae stole the show in the 100m and 200m U18 men’s sprint divisions, claiming two gold medals.
Avae, who trains under the Kokofa Athletics Club of Gordon Secondary School in Port Moresby, has represented his school and club well, flying the Kokofa flag high in the skies with pride and honor.
The Bougainville-Gulf teenage sensation just began his athletics journey this year while enrolling at Gordon Secondary School, having trained and mentored by coach John Gitiri.
Avae quickly made strides and drew the attention of coach Gitiri and those within the athletics circle with his athletic ability, winning and dominating various school competitions this year, and pushing his way to the national championship.
The rookie athlete expressed satisfaction on his maiden appearance at the national championship and anticipated a call-up to the national squad ahead of the 2025 Mini Pacific Games in Palau.
“I am happy about my timing in the 100m and 200m races to win two gold medals. As the gun went off, I knew that I was going to cross the line first, and it happened,” Avae said.
“I trained hard for the national championship, so I’m pleased with my timings for the 100m and 200m races, respectively.
“I am now looking forward to the Mini Pacific Games next year, and hopefully get selected to represent my country.”
